When date night turns into a full-blown experiment (and no eyebrows were harmed in the making).
🍂 Wait… Mythbusters in October?!
October usually means autumn vibes, spooky movies, and pumpkin-flavoured everything…
But not us. 😏
This month my OH threw a total curveball and picked Mythbusters as our theme night — and he’s one very happy camper! 💥

The kids even joined in this time since they’re right at that fun age where science experiments, explosions, and “testing myths” are absolutely fascinating. Before I knew it, we were all watching old episodes together — and I realised just how much nostalgia those iconic “3…2…1…BOOM!” moments still bring.
The Menu 🔬💥
This menu was built with science in mind… okay, maybe not actual science, but plenty of fun, explosions of flavour, and a few cheeky nods to the show:

🧨 Starter: Mini Dynamite Dogs
The Myth: Can you wrap mini sausages in croissant dough and create an explosion of flavour?
The Result: Confirmed! (even if the dough was a last-minute substitution).
The original recipe called for crescent roll dough — but since we’re in the UK and crescent dough isn’t exactly lining Asda’s shelves, I went for croissant dough… or tried to. Could I find it that day? Of course not. So, puff pastry it was! And honestly? Totally delicious. Crispy, buttery, and perfectly flaky.

💥 Main & Side: Jamie’s Big Boom Pulled Chicken Sandwiches + Gravity-Defying Mac & Cheese
If there’s one thing Jamie (from Mythbusters) loves, it’s a big boom. And this main was exactly that — an explosion of flavour.
I slow-cooked the chicken until it was fall-apart tender, then mixed it with a tangy BBQ sauce and served it up on toasted brioche buns. For the side? Creamy, gooey, Gravity-Defying Mac & Cheese that could stand up to even the most rigorous taste test.

🍪 Dessert: Control Group Cookies
Sometimes you just can’t beat the control group — especially when it involves chocolate chip cookies!
I went for store-bought ones this time (from the bakery section OH loves), so it was still a win.
To keep things on theme, I got creative and served them on a test tube rack — which fit them perfectly!

🍹 Drink: The Buster Bomb
Myth: Can cherry cola and rum actually taste good together?
Verdict: Surprisingly… Confirmed!
This was a fun experiment — and one we made in two versions. The kids had their mocktail (cherry cola + grenadine + ice), and us adults got the real Buster Bomb — cherry cola, grenadine, and a splash of spiced rum. I’m not usually a cherry or rum fan, but for science, I drank it like a trooper. And shockingly? It was nice! cola fizzing, red straw, lime wedge—bonus points for a little “safety hazard” drink marker!)

Decor & Set Up 🧫
Once again, our longest kitchen countertop became the official Mythbusters lab (aka dining table).
Here’s what we used:
- Blueprint paper as the table cover (very Mythbusters-core)
- White gel pen for doodling diagrams & fake “data”
- Playmobil crash test dummy as a mini tribute to Buster 🧡 (which the youngest has now adopted as his own)
- Caution tape between each course (safety first!)
- Safety goggles for each “scientist”
- Beakers with coloured water
- Glow sticks around each dish for that experimental glow
- A Mythbusters sign right in the centre, because branding matters 😉

The Night 📺
We’ve watched every single episode of Mythbusters multiple times over the years, but that didn’t stop us from watching a few favourites while we ate. From the epic “Cement Truck Explosion” to the “Duck Quack Doesn’t Echo” myth, we revisited all the big booms and laughs that made the show so iconic.

Final Thoughts ❤
As I mentioned in my last The Chapter Check-In, my OH’s been struggling with his mental health lately — so seeing him light up and fully enjoy this theme night honestly made it so worth it.
Sometimes the best myth to bust is the one that says “date nights have to be fancy.”
Turns out, laughter, science, and shared silliness do far more for the heart 💛
